Say No to 0870 numbers with saynoto0870.com
I found this website recently but completely forgot about it. What it is, is a huge database of local-rate telephone numbers for companies that force you to call their premium rate 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers.
It is very useful for tight fisted people like me who begrudge paying 50p/minute for support from companies when I pay my phone operator enough already for free minutes to standard landlines
For example.. To phone Sky Digital on their standard phone number ( 0870 2404040 ) will cost you around 20p/minute, maybe more - maybe less. With saynoto0870.com, a quick search reveals the local-rate number 01506 421726. For those of you with inclusive minutes, this call will be taken from them and you won't be charged. For all others this will probably cost you a fraction of the price of the 0870 number as this is charged at the rate of a landline call to Bathgate (Don't ask, I don't know where this is either!)
From their website:
Many people don't realise that there are many phone providers offering cheaper calls to standard telephone numbers (those beginning with 01 or 02), which don't apply to 0844, 0845, 0870 or 0871 telephone numbers. - Please see the links page and click on Cheapest Call Provider for price details. This shows that by using multiple providers, you can reduce your call cost on standard telephone numbers to as little as 3p fixed cost (regardless of duration), whereas the cheapest provider to 0870 numbers during the day that I am aware of charges 4p/min (+ 3p connection fee) to call.
Worst still some companies that use these numbers are actually receiving a cut of the phone call costs.
If you have an 'inclusive landline calls' phone package, then it is very rare that 0844, 0845, 0870, or 0871 numbers are are included in your 'free minutes' allocation, unlike normal numbers. Many mobile phone packages also exclude freephone 0800 and 0808 numbers for your bundled minutes.
Many companies advertise a separate number that can be used when calling from abroad - This usually begins in the format +44 - There is nothing to stop you using this number from the UK (as it is a normal rate telephone call), and will be included in any inclusive minutes provided by your landline or mobile phone provider. Many others will give you a standard number if you ask.
This site is all about listing these numbers, saving you money, without having to pay additional charges. To get started and find a particular number, please click on the 'Search to find an alternative number' link at the top of the page.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the site. Please continue to add any new numbers as and when you find them.
serFISH.com Web based SSH Client – A true lifesaver :)
Hello
Today I found myself stuck at college with a crashed dedi and hundreds (ok tens) of angry Drag Racer players. I tried to get my provider to do a remote reboot, but this takes hours so I set about trying to find another way around it
Ofcourse at college we are stuck behind a Proxy server restricting access to almost everything. I also can't download/execute .exe files in windows so this ruled out SSH. I tried telnet by typing "telnet://groomi.net" into IE, but to no avail!
So.. I fired up google and searched for "Online SSH Client". I was fairly pessimistic and expected to find java applets that point to specific servers. At first this was exactly what I found, but after 2 or 3 results, I found what I was looking for!
serFish.com is a web based SSH client which allowed me to connect to my SSH using only http (AJAX / Javascript) in Firefox, which allowed me to restart Apache and resurrect my server and respective websites. I owe this service many thanks and will be using it in the future providing that my dedi isn't hijacked. There was a massive lack of confidence instilling SSL certificates or any information about the service so I won't be suprised if my passwords go walkabout soon
. One complaint I do have however is the Captcha images. Every 2 or 3 minutes I was pestered by an image verifying that I'm not a robot. Surely 1 per visit is enough?!

Access your secure shell server by use of this free browser-based web SSH client. No more firewall or proxy restrictions for server and system administrators.
As a free AJAX SSH client, the consoleFISH provides web-based access to any SSH server. It can be used to bypass firewalls and proxies on a secure HTTP connection. Moreover, the consoleFISH makes it possible to anonymously open SSH connections as the IP address of the connecting web client is not sent to the remote system.
The service is designed for server and system administrators who want to have backup remote access to their systems but do not want to install their own SSL certificates, AJAX SSH software, etc.
That's all for now

Back to Apache
After coming upon a problem of massive loadtimes, I have decided to revert my HTTP serving task back to good old, trusty, Apache 2.2. This time, however, I am using PHP with the aid of APC (Alternative PHP Cache) which seems to have dropped page loadtimes by about .5/second all across the board.
Please, let me know if load times have suffered or improved any as I continue to make this website as fast as it can be
Cheers
Stephen
And here it is
You are now viewing this website from my new Dedicated server
. It has:
Intel Core Quad Q6600
4GB Ram
160GB space
6IP addresses
1.5TB bandwidth at 100mbps
Please let me know if you see any issues/errors as the migration was sort of rushed in between doing a few other things.
Please also tell me if you see a noticeable drop in load times as this was the main objective of the move
Cheers

Dedicated Server
Today I have just ordered a Dedicated Server to host all of my websites
This is due to the increased load being put on the server by my facebook app Drag Racer. The server I got was from Hivelocity.com and has the following specs:
Intel Core Quad Q6600
4GB Ram
160GB space
6IP addresses
1.5TB bandwidth at 100mbps
This cost me $140/mo
To you guys this means, crazy fast load times but most importantly Hosting!
I will offer hosting at a fair price to anyone who asks. Just post me a comment in this blog and I will consider your request
It will be Apache or Lighttpd (I haven't decided yet) With PHP Support, MySQL, etc etc
Cheers
Stephen
