Greetings from my Hackintosh!

This blog comes to you from within safari, but not a windows port.. This is the real deal!

Today I managed to successfully get my PC hardware to run MacOS and as far as I can see, everything is working dandy. It boots fine, I’ve just managed to get my ethernet drivers in and after much MUCH difficulty earlier today my 8800GTX is functioning properly.

I am still unconvinced as to which will become my primary OS but for now, the geek in me is happy to dual-boot and my idea of installing UbuntuStudio has died.

I will be installing Logic8 and a few other goodies later but for now I’ll just enjoy that I have done something against the grain today and it’s actually worked!

If anyone has had any problems running MacOS on PC hardware or would like a guide on how I did it, please don’t be shy to post in the comments!

I want a MacPC :)

A few weeks ago I bought myself a new PC after finally admitting that my old Athlon 3800+ was obsolete.

I can’t believe that I didn’t blog that already but here’s a quick run down of the specs:

Asus P5K-c
Intel CoreQuad Q6600
4GB Geil budget crap DDR2 RAM
Nvidia 8800GTX
Universal CPU Waterblock

Anyway.. After speaking to a lecturer today at college and toying with the idea of which OS to run, I’ve decided that I’m going to install Mac OS with iATKOS on this box alongside Windows XP and possibly Ubuntu Studio.

I’m not sure which OS I will be using most frequently but after using Ubuntu for a week or two when my Athlon gave up the ghost, I realised that you can do pretty much anything in linux that you can in windows with the exception of games.

I’ll post progress later tonight or possibly tomorrow after I’ve had a play in OSx to tell you guys how it went.

Wrong Place, Right Time

Today I have just had a phone call from my dad who’s currently working on offshore Oil Rigs. Not too unusual you’d think, but the first few words to come out of his mouth scared me, prematurely.

The conversation went something like this:
Me: Hello
Dad: Hey, where are you
Me: Home, why?
Dad: Have you seen the news
Me: What news
Dad: "Our" Helicopter has just gone down
I was speaking to him, so he wasn’t dead, and that was the main worry, but fact remained that he was in the middle of a big helicopter rescue. I spoke to him for a few minutes and found out a few things.

Wednesday is his crew change date but he wasn’t due to fly today. The helicopter that went down though, was the same helicopter that he got dropped off on this time last week, and the same that he would have used to fly next week. To you guys that probably doesn’t sound like much but it is very scary for me and I can’t beleive his luck that he was in the "wrong place at the right time".

There were no fatalities in the crash from what I can comprehend but there were 16 crew (all my dads workmates) and 2 pilots who were in the water for 2 hours in 3 meter (10 foot) sees in probably subzero temperatures and they were all rescued and either flown or boated to safety. Atleast now I know why all the riggers undergo an intensive survival training course every few years.

Anyway, I am waffling proably due to being in shock a little so I’ll let a professional explain the situation as it was about 40 minutes ago:
A crew of 18 on board a helicopter which crashed into the North Sea off the coast of Scotland has been rescued.

Super Pumas are used to ferry oil workers between the shore and rigs

A full scale rescue operation using four more helicopters is still underway after the Super Puma aircraft went down in the sea whilst approaching a platform.

Flares have been fired from the scene and lifejacket lights were spotted in the water.

The helicopters are used to transport oil workers to and from rigs and offshore factories.

RAF aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth and Kinloss are at the scene along with two helicopters from the oil company.

It is understood that several earlier helicopter flights in the area had been cancelled due to the rough weather.

Low-lying cloud were hampering the rescue operation and waves are up to 3 metres high.

The alarm was raised just before 7pm.

RAF Squadron Leader Dave Webster described the incident as very rare.

The Super Puma is one type of chopper used for oil and gas personnel in the North Sea and has 18 passenger seats and two pilot seats. It is believed there were 16 passengers and two pilots on board the stricken aircraft.

The passengers will have had survival suits to protect them from the cold water and a flotation device is installed on the Puma.

I have pets!

Yesterday Siobhan thought it would be a good idea to drive to Pets at Home and buy me a small animal. I remembered having a Rabbit a few years ago and it being a great companion so we jumped in the car and headed off to the shop :) . We went in and had a quick browse about.

I got inside and straight in front of us was the Rabbit pen. "Rabbit" I screamed as I remembered all of the fun times me and Bugsy (My previous rabbit) had shared.. I was quietly told that a rabbit wasn’t an option as it was too expensive and too much work. I agreed, and we browsed some more. There were syrian hamsters, chinese dwarf hamsters, campbells dwarf hamsters, rats, mice, chinchillas, gerbils and guinea pigs ‘aplenty but I was strictly told "No Tails" so that ruled out most things besides Hamsters and Guinea Pigs.

On browsing again I came a cross one of these:

Again I was told "NO RABBITS", especially since the "Giant Houserabbit" could grow to 4 feet long or something crazy. This, however, is an idea for the future!

Next came the Guinea pigs.. I saw two to be housed together and fell for them immediately. To cut a long story short, I wasn’t allowed these either and I’m not sure why :( . I think it’s mostly because the cage required to keep them in would have been A: the size of my room; and B: too small anyways.

After much deliberation we brought these little guys home:

They’re Campbells Dwarf Hamsters and one if them is an Albino :D . Siobhan chose that one and I got a darker coloured one . We haven’t yet chose names so comments will be nice \/ \/ \/. I need to chose a black name for mine so god knows what I’ll end up choosing.

For anyone wanting to buy a hamster for kid’s first pet, don’t buy these!!! I’ve had mine out to play today and the first thing they both did was bite me on the end of the finger (twice, same finger, EXACT same spot :@). Apparently they can become friendly if you handle them alot though so I intend on petting them for an hour or two each day till they stop trying to eat me :) . Today’s achievement was to get them both climbing up my arms but I had to put a stop to that as I bet they’re hard to catch when they jump off :D .

Anyway yeah, summary: I bought two hamsters, and they bite!!

I promise the next blog will be alot less feminine / gay but I had to think of something to post about as you guys will stop checking for updates if there aren’t any. Plus, since when did a random post ever go unread :)

I’m off to get bit some more!

Love
Stephen

Stop Windows Update from restarting your PC automatically

This morning I woke up to find my PC turned on. Not unusual you might think, but when you consider that I had been encoding a DVD with the program set to "Shut down when complete", it was.

What had happened (and seems to happen more and more often) was that windows had automatically updated it’sself and then restarted my PC. Not a big deal you might think, but it starts to be a big deal when you often go to sleep while your pc downloads and seeds torrents, or encodes avi files to DVD, it can quickly become very annoying and so I went in search of a way to disable it.

Disable Automatic Restart

After a few minutes of rephrasing my problem in google a solution was found.

1: Click Start > Run.
2: Type "gpedit.msc" and press enter.
3: Navigate to "Local Computer Policy" > "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Components" > "Windows Update"
4: Double click the entry "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations"
5: Select "Enabled" from the three options and press OK.
6: Close all open windows and restart your computer. Automatic updates should now run without automatically restarting your PC and giving control back to you.

I hope this helped someone because it was invaluable to me :)

GTA IV – Finally!!

So it finally happened.. Today I finally got to play a proper session on GTA 4 after buying it on the… 10th of this month.

As-per the post below I went out and bought myself an ATI Radeon 4670. It arrived a few days later and I missed the parcel. Luckily, CityLink delivered it to a house a few doors down so I have to thank them for that.. I get home and go straight to the door to get my parcel. The old lady is out somewhere :( so I wait watching eagerly until I see her husbands return. Finally!! The 4670 is in my hands and I can now play GTA!!!

I get into the house, take my PC apart a little and install the new graphics card. This takes about 10 minutes and the drivers were installed and working in even less time than that. Now, SURELY I can play GTA so I load up the game. It launches atleast this time but I am greeted with low framerates (1-10 fps at best) and lots of out-of-memory crashes. I am devistated and concede that I won’t be playing GTA till I buy myself a new PC.

I had priced up a Core 2 Quad (which I still intend to buy) with about 4gig ram + a sexy new case for around £450. This is too much of a hit to the pocket until next year so I begin to overclock. I had managed to get the game to launch and run but it was still only working for about 2 minutes before it crashed :(

Today though, my friend Ben gave me some advice that has allowed me to play GTA :D :D:D. I asked him what a safe voltage was to run on my CPU (AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2) and he told me 1.6v!!! I had been overclocking mine at 1.4v and had only managed 2400MHz which wasn’t doing much for GTA as that was still only the minimum system requirement.

With his advice though, I have now got my PC overclocked to the following specs and it plays GTA 4 with no troubles :D
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2
Voltage: 1.5
FSB: 255
Multiplier: x10
Core Speed: 2550 MHz

RAM: 2 x 512 Corsair Value Select DDR400 + 2x Kingston Value DDR 333
Ratio (RAM/FSB): 1.5:1
Frequency: 170MHz
Timings: 2.5 3 3 7 10 2T 16
Volts: 1.7
Pretty long blog there but it all leads to this statement:

When buying a game. ALWAYS be sure that you meet minimum system requirements!

Cheers
Overclocker Groom ;)

Gta IV – The story so far

As I mentioned in my last post, GTA 4 is out for PC and I decided that I should probably buy it for myself if the price is right.

Yesterday I did just that and got home at about 9pm happier than I’ve been alone in ages and started to install. I figured from the off that it was going to take some time so I kept installing.. and installing.. and installing.. and installing.. and after 45 or so minutes had registered to the two websites the installer asked for, installed the game, verified the key, and verified that it was past the release date.. Phew..

So, I fires up the game on my not-below average machine (Amd Athlon X2 3800+ 64, 2gig DDR400, HIS ATI x800GTO) and gets a "Fatal Error: DD3D50"

After some research, I find out that this is a "DirectX 9 required error" which I thought was a little odd considering AFAIK the x800 is a DX9 card.

So, to cur a long story short, aside from costing me £27.99 for the game, I have also ended up yesterday night buying a new graphics card in an effort to bring my PC up to some sort of modern standard which now has the following vitals:

Socket 949 AMD Athlon X2 3800+ 64bit
2GB ddr400 RAM
500+ GB hdd space (I forget exactly how much)
ATI Radeon HD 4670 1GB

So now the most valuable and modern part of the PC is probably the gfx card, sad really.. I will probably be getting a Core2 or Core quad in the new year though so it’s ok for now :)

Regards
A Groomi who’s itching to play his new game which has so far cost him £110

ps. Anyone want to buy a radeon x800?

GTA IV for PC :)

Apparently I have been living under a rock and managed to miss the release of GTA IV on PC on the third of this month!

I have been jealous of all of my friend’s with their next-gen consoles who have been able to play this game and I nearly bought a PS3 myself just so I could play it. I have learned in the past though that this is a bad idea, and having recently sold my £3-400 worth of Xbox + games for £20 on ebay, manged to talk myself out of buying a PS3.

I have then, been waiting patiently for GTA IV to come out on PC, even though Rockstar promised that it would be a console release only, and have found myself going shopping, but with no money to buy it :(

I suppose reasonably, if it is less than £30 in shops today, I will buy it as a Christmas gift to myself :) If it isn’t though, I will hold out until January and buy it online probably for around £20.

Sorry for the out-of-the blue post by the way, I just posted this here so that you guys knew that I wasn’t dead or something.

Cheers
Stephen

Facebook Status now Cached

Hello, due to the 20-odd second load times that I was experiencing, the facebook status is now cached to MySQL every ten minutes and then output from the database to the main page.

If anyone wants any help to implement this, please leave a comment below and if there are enough interested people, I will release it as a downloadable widget!
